Weeknight dinners at our house must fit three criteria:

  1. Quick.
  2. Easy.
  3. Likely to be eaten and enjoyed by picky kids and slightly-less picky parents.

That’s not too much to ask, is it? 😉

I rely on my crock pot a lot for weeknight meals during the school year. I also double the recipe every time I make a casserole so that I have extras to pull out of the freezer for dinners on particularly busy evenings. But aside from crock pot and freezer meals, I often go for recipes that can be prepped, cooked, and ready to eat in about 30 minutes or less.

Enter a longtime family favorite, which happens to be one of the easiest chicken apple sausage recipes out there: Sheet Pan Chicken Apple Sausage with Apples!

Ingredients

One of the best parts of this chicken apple sausage recipe is that you only need THREE ingredients to make it!

Ingredients to make chicken apple sausage recipes, including aidells chicken apple sausage, apples, and maple syrup.
  • Chicken apple sausage. My kids have always loved chicken and apple sausage, and it’s nicely complemented by both the sliced apples and the maple syrup in this recipe. I almost always make my chicken apple sausage recipes with Aidells chicken apple sausage. It's a natural brand (without added sulfites) that I don’t feel guilty about feeding my family. I can typically find Aidells sold in a 12-ounce package of 4 links or a 16-ounce package of 5 links (the latter being part of a Costco 3-pack). Either size will work for this recipe…but a 16-ounce package of chicken apple sausage will simply increase the sausage-to-apple ratio a bit and give you slightly larger servings.
  • Apples. If I'm specifically buying apples for this recipe, I usually buy two apples of different varieties. One invariably turns out softer than the other, and one is usually sweet while the other is more tart, but I think it’s nice to have a little variety. Any apple should work fine, although Braeburns, Fujis, Granny Smiths, Pink Ladies, Galas, or Honeycrisps will hold their shape better in the oven. But it’s A-OK to use your favorites or whatever you have in the fridge! I always have Honeycrisp apples in my refrigerator, so that's often what I use in my chicken apple sausage recipes.
  • Pure maple syrup. For brusing on the chicken apple sausage and apple slices. The grade or color of maple syrup doesn't really matter...just make sure it's pure! 🙂

Believe it or not, a variation of this Sheet Pan Chicken Apple Sausage recipe was one of the first recipes I ever published to Five Heart Home -- just two months into blogging -- waaay back in 2013. In that version, I speared chicken apple sausage slices and apple chunks onto skewers and brushed them with maple syrup.

However, in the dozen years since then, I've made this chicken apple sausage recipe countless times. And I don't bother with the extra step of assembling kabobs anymore...I just bake it as an effortless sheet pan dinner!

Modifications

If you don't have (or can't find) chicken apple sausage, no problem!

You could easily make this recipe with another type of sausage instead, such as kielbasa or plain chicken sausage.

Just don't choose an alternate sausage with a strong flavor that won't be naturally complemented by the sweet apples and maple syrup.

Doubling the Recipe

Depending on the size of the package of sausage that you buy, this recipe yields three moderate or four small servings.

If you have more mouths to feed (or larger appetites) than that, the recipe can easily be doubled. However, you may need to divide it between two sheet pans so as not to overcrowd the ingredients.

If roasting on two pans, rotate the pans and switch their racks after the first 15 minutes.

Back when my kids were young, making a singe recipe was enough...but now I always have to double it!

And there you have it! A yummy, easy, sheet pan dinner that will satisfy the family while requiring minimal time and effort from the cook.

I hope it proves to be just as popular at your house!

Notes

  • I use a rimmed “half sheet pan” for this recipe, measuring 13”x18”x1”.
  • I typically use Aidells Chicken Apple Sausage, which is sold in a 12-ounce package of 4 links or a 16-ounce package of 5 links (the latter being part of a Costco 3-pack). Either size will work for this recipe…but a 16-ounce package of chicken apple sausage will simply increase the sausage-to-apple ratio a bit and give you slightly larger servings.
  • This recipe is easily doubled, but you may need to divide it between two sheet pans so as not to overcrowd the ingredients. If roasting on two pans, rotate the pans and switch racks after the first 15 minutes.
  • If you want an apple that will hold it’s shape in the oven, Fuji, Braeburn, or Honeycrisps all work well. I always have Honeycrisps on hand, so that’s usually what I use.
