There aren't many dinners that you can get on the table faster than whipping up Sloppy Joes. And while the store-bought sauce that rhymes with San-wich might make this meal even quicker, it's got some less-than-ideal ingredients. After all, I tend to avoid high fructose corn syrup in my sweets, much less my dinner.

So what's a Sloppy Joe lovin' family to do? Why, put together your own quick and easy, all-natural sauce, of course! Once you make these amazing homemade Sloppy Joes, y'all, you won't go back.

Ingredients

This sloppy joe sauce only takes a couple of minutes to stir together, it tastes soooo much better (in fact, you get to control how sweet and/or salty you want it), and you don't have to worry about any unnecessary additives!

  • Ground beef. I usually use 85/15 ground beef, but it's okay to use a leaner or fattier ratio, depending on what you have on hand. The grease gets drained either way. Alternatively, these homemade Sloppy Joes also turn out delicious using ground turkey.
  • Garlic. Fresh garlic is great, but to save time, I often use minced garlic in water, which I always keep in my refrigerator.
  • Tomato sauce. An 8-ounce can of tomato sauce is the perfect amount for this recipe. I sometimes use tomato puree (passata) instead if I already have a jar open in the fridge.
  • Ketchup. I prefer using an all-natural brand of ketchup without too much added sugar. As you'll see below, I like to control the sugar. 🙂 Keep this in mind as the sweetness of your ketchup will likely dictate how much additional sugar you want to (or don't want to) add.
  • Brown sugar. An important recipe note...use as much or as little brown sugar as you like! Some people prefer totally savory Sloppy Joes while others like their sandwiches on the sweeter side. You may also substitute a squeeze of honey in place of using brown sugar, which I often do.
  • Worcestershire sauce. For an extra savory undertone. Again, you may tweak the amount to your liking.
  • Prepared mustard. Believe it or not, a little squirt of plain ol' yellow mustard adds depth of flavor.
  • Garlic powder + onion powder + fresh black pepper. For further seasoning.

How to Make Sloppy Joes

(The below photos are intended to be helpful, but please refer to the recipe card at the bottom of this post for FULL DIRECTIONS.)

I shared my Slow Cooker Chicken Sloppy Joes awhile back, which feature this same homemade sloppy joe sauce. But sometimes you don't have the forethought (or the time) to toss something into the crockpot first thing in the morning.

So if you still want an effortless, family-pleasing meal come 5 o'clock, make this tried-and-true Sloppy Joe recipe!

I like to start out by mixing up my sauce and setting it aside so that it's ready to go once my meat is browned.

  1. Measure the Sloppy Joe sauce ingredients directly into a 2-cup glass measuring cup and stir together until well combined.

Sloppy Joe Recipe Additions

My family likes our Sloppy Joes on the plain and simple side. However, if your family likes yours with onions and/or peppers, they're easy to add!

  1. Before browning the ground beef, dice up half an onion and half a bell pepper and cook them in a tablespoon of olive oil until softened (about 5 to 10 minutes).
  2. Remove the onions and peppers from the pot and proceed with the recipe, cooking the meat and then stirring the onions/peppers back in at the same time you add the sauce.

How Long to Simmer Sloppy Joe Sauce

This Sloppy Joe recipe is flexible and turns out tasty whether you need to make it in a flash or you have extra time to allow it to simmer.

At a minimum, you should let the mixture simmer long enough to heat through once you've stirred the sauce into the meat. I'd recommend 10 minutes of simmering, if possible.

However, if you have the time, the flavors will really meld and develop if you allow your mixture to simmer for 30 to 45 minutes (or even longer). Just keep the heat low and stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning. And if the sauce starts to get too thick, stir in a little bit of water to buy you more simmering time.

Crock Pot Option

One trick I sometimes use is to make this recipe on the stove and then transfer it to a slow cooker (set to WARM) just before I go pick up my kids from school. When it's time to eat that evening, dinner is already ready and the flavor is extra yummy...double win!

Alternatively, if you need to whip up this Sloppy Joe recipe more than an hour or two ahead of time, you can actually let the sloppy joe sauce do its cooking in the crock pot (as opposed to simply keeping it warm, as described above):

  1. Brown and drain the ground beef and transfer to a slow cooker.
  2. Add all of the sauce ingredients and stir well to combine.
  3. Scrape down the sides of the slow cooker with a spatula (so that the sauce around the edges doesn't burn), cover, and cook on LOW for 4 to 6 hours.
  4. Stir well and serve!

If you choose to make homemade Sloppy Joes this way, just keep in mind that if your particular model of slow cooker runs hot, the sauce may darken a bit around the edges. But if you're home, you can stir a couple of times during the cooking time to help prevent this.

Also, make sure your slow cooker is suitable to the size of the recipe. In other words, if you have a crock pot that's on the larger size, you may want to double or triple the recipe!

Other Ideas for Serving Sloppy Joes

Everybody knows that meaty Sloppy Joe sauce is scrumptious piled high on hamburger buns! But there are lots of other fantastic ways to enjoy it, whether you're wanting to put a new twist on a fresh batch or you're simply using up leftovers:

  • Turn it into a "casserole." For example, you could arrange tater tots on top, like this Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole, or bake a crust on top, similar to Cheeseburger Pie or a even a cornbread casserole.
  • Stir into mac & cheese or other pasta.
  • Sprinkle over nachos.
  • Fold into quesadillas.
  • Top baked potatoes (and then melt cheese over the top).
  • Spoon it over hot dogs in place of chili (like Chili Dogs).
  • Or similarly, spoon it over French fries and add cheese (like Chili Cheese Fries).
  • Stir it into queso for a hearty dip with tortilla chips.
  • Stuff it into bell peppers and then bake.
  • Layer it into grilled cheese sandwiches.

There's a reason this Sloppy Joe recipe is one of the all-time most popular recipes on the site, folks.

Kids adore it, but adults love it, too.

It's so simple but oh-so-good.

A side salad, some baked beans, and -- of course -- some thickly-sliced pickles on top of your Sloppy Joes, and...dinner is served!

Helpful Tips, Tricks, & Equipment

  • If you're making your own homemade Sloppy Joes in order to avoid processed ingredients, be sure to use all-natural ketchup.
  • The sauce in this Sloppy Joe recipe is intended to be slightly sweet, but it's really a matter of taste. If you prefer a more savory sauce, feel free to use less brown sugar. Additionally, you may use unrefined sugar or a squeeze of honey in place of the brown sugar, if you wish.

This is a great recipe. I've never had the canned stuff, my mom always made homemade and so have I. I love trying new recipes, esp if they are quick and easy. My kids loved this recipe. I'm not exaggerating when I say my daughter refuses everything I put in front of her for dinner, (unless it's cheese pizza) and she devoured these sloppy joes. Thanks for shearing

    1. As a fellow mom of a cheese pizza (and not much else) aficionado, that's the greatest recipe compliment ever, Rhea! So happy to hear that your family enjoyed these sloppy joes so much. 🙂

Now that I am no longer working evenings, I am cooking supper for my family every night! We tried sloppy joes two nights ago and it was amazing! I have beef stroganoff in the crock pot now and it smells heavenly! Going to make cheeseburger macaroni tomorrow. Thank you Samantha, I am so glad I found you!!

    1. What a sweet comment, Kristen...I'm so glad you found me, too! 😉 You are awesome for cooking dinner for your family every night, and I'm thrilled to hear that my recipes are making that job easier. I hope that everything you've tried -- and plan on trying -- is a hit!

I just made these recently and they are fantastic. We love sloppy joes but the canned has definitely gone down in terms of quality and amount of ingredients. Glad to find a simple recipe that tastes so wonderful.

    1. I'm thrilled to hear that these were a hit, Katie! It's hard to go back to the canned stuff after seeing how yummy and easy it is to make your own sauce. Hope your family enjoys this recipe for years to come! 🙂

    1. Hi Julia! Sorry...the yield is in rather small print in the top, left corner of the recipe. This recipe makes about four loaded Sloppy Joe sandwiches. 🙂 Hope that helps, and hope you enjoy!

    1. You're very welcome, Tracy! I love hearing that your family loved these...and I appreciate you taking the time to come back and let me know! 🙂

This is such an easy and great recipe! I used less brown sugar because I don't like my food to sweet, overall, it was fantastic!! I added onion lettuce tomatoes and cilantro!!! So good!!!

    1. So happy to hear you enjoyed this, Lori! And I've never tried cilantro on a sloppy joe...what a great idea!

    1. Good question, Nate! I use liquid mustard in this recipe, so I just went back and clarified the ingredient list to call for "prepared mustard." I always indicate ground mustard if I'm talking about the powdered stuff, but I appreciate you letting me know that this recipe wasn't clear. 🙂 Have a great weekend!

  5. Can't wait to try this! Have you tried doubling or tripling the recipe? I'll be feeding a brood next week!

    1. Hi Chelsea! You should be able to double, triple, or multiply exponentially this recipe with no problems. 🙂 Hope your brood enjoys these sandwiches!

  6. I don't have any tomato sauce on hand but I do have canned tomatoes. Do you think that would work instead?

    1. Hi Barbara! I apologize for my delayed reply. I think canned tomatoes would work just fine in lieu of tomato sauce in this recipe, as long as you don't mind little pieces of tomato in your Sloppy Joes. 🙂 Hope you enjoy!

I made these tonight and they are so good! My husband and older son might not get any if they don't get home soon!

    1. Oh, I'm so happy you liked these, Sara! Hopefully your hubby and son didn't miss out on the yumminess...and if they did, I bet they'll learn to get home more quickly next time! 😉 Ha.

These were so good and super easy! I used ground venison. Instead of making a sauce and then stirring it in, I just poured all the ingredients straight into the pot. Worked great! My kiddos loved it.

    1. So glad y'all enjoyed these, Stacy! And I'm glad you pointed out that you can measure the sauce ingredients straight on top of the cooked/drained ground beef...I've made this recipe that way before as well. 😉 Thanks for the comment and hope you're having a great week!

I made these tonight and found the sauce to be so easy and such a great balance of exciting favors. Great recipe-- even with onions! Thanks for another winner.

    1. Yay, Carolyn! I'm so glad that y'all enjoyed these...and I will even forgive you for tainting them with onions! Ha. 😉 Hope you're having a fabulous week and hope to see you all soon!

  10. This is such a great looking sandwich and so easy to put together. I know what you mean about the can version...there's a whole lot going on in them. My husband likes to add canned chili to his hot dogs on our quick and easy dinner nights. I tease him that it looks like cat food.

    1. Ha, Thao...I may never look at canned chili the same away again (although I have to admit that I agree with you)! Hope this homemade version of sloppy joes passes the test with your husband if you have a chance to try it... 😉

  11. You know what's funny? I went grocery shopping and almost bought a can of sloppy joe mix because well... its one meal the entire family won't complain about. But I didn't buy it because I thought, "I might be able to find a homemade recipe somewhere... And here I have it! I can't wait to try it. Pinning.

I would love if you linked this up to Totally Terrific Tuesdays which goes LIVE tonight at 9pm CST. Hope to see you there!

    1. Ha, Sharon...sounds like it was meant to be! My family is the same way in their universal love of all things sloppy joe, and it's nice to be able to whip some up with regular ingredients from the fridge and pantry! 😉 Hope you enjoy these, thanks so much for the pin, and hopping over to your link party now. 🙂

  12. My mom looooves sloppy joes but I hate the overly sweet taste of the canned sauce. I haven't found a homemade sauce I like yet but I think I just did! Adding this to the list and pinning!

    1. That's what's nice about this sauce, Meaghan...you can make it as sweet or savory as you like! I don't think it's as sweet as the canned stuff but it does include some brown sugar, so you can certainly cut back on that if you prefer. Hope it's a hit if you have a chance to try it, and thanks so much for the pin! 🙂

  13. I love sloppy joes, I don't know why I don't think of eating them more often. Yours look delicious! And I love that picture of your 2 year old trying to grab the sandwich!

    1. Ha, Aimee...she's such a stinker, always inserting herself into my food photos and stealing my props! 😉 Soon enough, your cute baby boy will be doing the same! Thanks for stopping by and enjoy these sloppy joes if you have a chance to try them... 🙂

  14. Those sloppy joes (and the pickle!) look wonderful..... that is pretty much how I make them also and I agree they are better...and better for my family than the canned stuff..... I really think the flavor is much better. Thank you for sharing this. 🙂

    1. Ha, Joy...I can hardly eat a sloppy joe without pickle slices! Thanks so much for stopping by and for the thoughtful comment. Hope your week is off to a wonderful start! 🙂

      1. When my daughter still lived at home sloppy joes were on e of her favs, but we always added shredded sharp cheddar. Yummy!
