Ingredients

Did you know that at any given moment, you are just a few short minutes away from straight-up, legitimate CAKE?! It's true.

As long as you're stocked with a few pantry basics, like...

  • Flour.
  • Cocoa powder.
  • Sugar.
  • Baking powder.
  • Vanilla.
  • Chocolate chips.

...and as long as you can rustle up a few items in the fridge...

  • Milk.
  • Butter.
  • Peanut butter.

...then you can whip up a fresh, decadent, piping-hot Chocolate Peanut Butter Mug Cake for one (or more!) in about the same amount of time it would take to scoop a bowl of ice cream!

(And, pssst...no egg required!)

How to Make a Mug Cake

Have you made a microwave mug cake before? They're kind of magical.

For this Chocolate Peanut Butter Mug Cake, you simply:

  1. Stir up your simple ingredients.
  2. Pour your batter into a mug.
  3. Dollop in a swirl of peanut butter and mini chocolate chips.
  4. And set the microwave for a minute!

Before your very eyes, the liquid batter rises up and bakes into a rich, gooey, chocolate cake with a molten peanut butter center.

And yes, it's every bit as good as it sounds.

Making Multiple Mug Cakes

If anyone else in the house shares your sweet tooth, you can easily double, triple, or quadruple this recipe.

Simply divide the batter between the corresponding number of mugs and microwave them one at a time.

With each cake only taking one minute to bake, you'll still have dessert ready in a matter of minutes.

Ways to Enjoy It

And it's up to you how you prefer to enjoy these little babies.

You can eat your dessert straight out of the mug (which is what I typically do).

Or if you're feeling fancy and don't mind dirtying one more dish, you can spray your mug with cooking spray before adding the batter and then overturn your cake onto a plate once baked for a quick take on a molten lava cake.

Well, hello there, lovely. Don't mind if I do.

Overturned on plate with molten center oozing out.

Regardless of how you choose to serve them, any fan of chocolate and peanut butter won't want to miss these to-die-for mug cakes!

After all, it's hard to beat fresh, hot, chocolate cake goodness, but if anything can, it would be a peanut buttery center.

And the fact that a Chocolate Peanut Butter Mug Cake can be ready -- from start to finish -- in under five minutes?

Well, that sounds like a pretty perfect way to satisfy a rogue sugar craving to me. 😉

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ cup milk, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled
  • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, and baking powder until thoroughly, completely combined with no streaks of flour or cocoa powder remaining. Blend in milk, butter, and vanilla until batter is smooth. Pour batter into a 14-ounce (or larger) microwave-safe mug with straight sides.
  • Combine peanut butter and chocolate chips and dollop into the center of the mug, gently pressing down until even with the top of the batter. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Allow to cool for a couple of minutes before serving.

Notes

  • A tall, cylindrical mug with straight (not angled) sides will ensure that the cake bakes evenly. I found a 14-ounce mug to be the perfect size to allow the cake to rise up while baking without overflowing. (I filled my mug to the top with water and then transferred the water to a measuring cup to determine its capacity.) If you use a smaller mug, you may want to bake the cake on top of a plate or paper towel to catch any possible overflow.
  • The strength of individual microwaves can vary. The first time you make this recipe, be prepared to experiment a bit to make sure that 1 minute is the perfect length of baking time. The nice thing about this cake is that even if it is undercooked, you don't have to worry about raw eggs!
  • The mini chocolate chips are optional. So is the peanut butter, for that matter. But I don't recommend skipping either. 😉
  • As an alternative to serving straight out of the mug, you may instead spray the mug with non-stick cooking spray before adding the batter, and then carefully overturn the cake onto a plate once baked.

  1. This is the best mug cake I’ve tried! I only used 1tbsp of sugar and dark chocolate chips, which made it PERFECT with some vanilla ice cream. The texture is great and it’s a good size to share…or enjoy yourself 🙂

This was so good I made (and devoured) two in one night. Don't judge! I added a pinch of salt to the second and it was somehow even better. Thanks!

    I love this recipe!
I’m a giant sweet tooth but my partner isn’t, this mug cake was just perfect for both of us and so rich. I used chocolate spread in mine instead of peanut butter because I really love chocolate, it turned out incredible.
Thank you for the amazing recipe 🥰

So easy and perfect for when you have a sweet tooth and don’t want to make an entire cake! It’s perfect for two people to share. I even forgot to add the baking powder and it was still good.

For those saying it’s too sweet, what do you expect?? It’s a chocolate peanut butter LAVA CAKE in case you didn’t read that part.

A mug cake recipe that actually works! I subbed Splenda for Baking and omitted the chocolate chips. Also added a drop or two of almond extract as well as a tiny pinch of salt. Turned out fudgy and chocolatey-and of course, peanut buttery! Thank you so much for this recipe, Samantha! Oh, btw, this is my first time finding your blog and recipes!

We have been on a mug cake bender since quarantine and this is by far the best one yet!!!! Amazing texture and flavors- definitely going to experiment with other add-ins. Thanks for this!

Ooh-so-very-rich and ooh-so-good! My microwave cooked it almost too much in 1 minute (I’m going to stop at 50 or 55 seconds next time) but it was still delicious! I used crunchy peanut butter, which didn’t ooze out like in the pictures, but the little crunchy bits of peanut were a nice surprise inside.

Wasn't sure how well my husband would like it, hes a very fussy eater. But as I sat there digging in and telling him that if he thought it was too rich, to just leave it, I hear the spoon hitting the mug repeatedly as he empties it.

Someone commented it was too sweet. I actually disagree! I used semisweet chips instead of mini milk, that may have helped!

i added some peanut butter to the batter and put brown sugar instead of sugar, and i also added powdered sugar to the peanut butter to make an icing but it was pretty good, kind mushy tho

My peanut butter hardened instead of melting, not sure why. Might have to do with using natural peanut butter since it tends to be drier. Besides that, this recipe is great! The texture of the cake is wonderful, it tastes great without being too sweet, and it doesn't dry out. I had to microwave it for about 1:30.

    Hi,
Just tried this peanut butter chocolate mug cake and let me say that I am impressed! Unfortunately, we were out of milk, so I used a vanilla yogurt in place of it in the same amount, and I was pleased to find it created a creamy consistency with a little bit of tang. While creating this, the yogurt along with the dry ingredients reminded me of the consistency of fudge. Any chance for a yogurt fudge recipe coming soon?!?! Thanks so much loved this recipe!!!

My husband and I have made this recipe twice, following the recipe exactly (besides the microwave time since they vary, so we cook them for more like one minute and forty-five seconds), and we absolutely LOVE them! We shared this recipe with our whole family. The cake is rich and fudgy, the center melting into a chocolate peanut butter sauce, and it is the perfect amount for one serving. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Love this! I make it more often than I probably should. I think using real butter vs oil that a lot of mug cakes call for makes a big difference! This is so moist and the melted peanut butter in the middle is deadly! Thank-you for such a delicious recipe!

I made this right after I saw the picture… It was incredibly easy to make and delicious. I would recommend this recipe to anyone who has 10 minutes to spare, it is a great snack and completely worth the time. Thank you for posting this recipe.

Delicious! I halved because my mugs are smaller and used almond milk. Also no minichips and full size ones worked fine.
