So raise your hand if you like to make homemade food gifts for friends and neighbors during the holidays or throughout the year? (I do! I do!) However, as much as I enjoy baking and sharing Christmas cookies and quick breads, there’s something I especially enjoy about food gifts that can be packaged up in a jar. In that past, I’ve made big holiday batches of candied nuts, granola, flavored coffee syrup, 5-Minute Caramel Sauce, Pretzel Turtles, and even savory Marinated Cheese & Olives. But this year, I thought it would be fun to put together a little treat for the Chai Tea lovers in my life!

Chai Tea Mix is a unique, versatile, powdered drink mix that can be stirred into warm milk for a homemade Chai Tea Latte. Or you can chill it and serve over ice for an Iced Chai Tea Latte. Or you can add some finely chopped semisweet or white chocolate to turn it into a Chocolate (or White Chocolate) Chai Tea Latte. And you can even blend with vanilla ice cream for a Chai Tea Shake! See what I mean? Versatile. πŸ˜‰

For those of you unfamiliar with the wonders of chai, the American version of this Indian-inspired drink typically combines black tea, aromatic spices, and milk. The resulting beverage is a lightly sweet, warmly spiced, creamy blend of tea and milk. And today’s Chai Tea Mix recipe gives you the satisfaction of drinking chai almost instantly…without the hassle (or cost) of a trip to Starbucks!

Chai Tea Mix ~ a unique homemade food gift for those who love Chai Tea; use the mix to whip up everything from lattes to milkshakes, and include the free printable gift tags with directions for gift giving! | FiveHeartHome.com This mix is so easy to put together that my toddler helped me assemble it. In fact, it only took a few minutes from start to finish…as long as you exclude the time it took me to clean up the broken spice bottle of ginger. My daughter often acts about 12 years old, which is why I sometimes forget that she’s still 2 and not to be trusted with glass receptacles quite yet. πŸ˜‰ Anyway, after (unsuccessfully) stacking the spice bottles, she helped press the button on the food processor to quickly incorporate the mixture of instant tea, powdered milk, powdered creamers, and spices. Let me just warn you that blending this mix will make your house smell like chai potpourri for the rest of the day…but that’s not at all a bad thing.

Chai Tea Mix is a unique homemade food gift for those who love Chai Tea! Use the mix to whip up everything from lattes to milkshakes, and include a free printable tag with directions for gift giving!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cardamom (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened instant tea (regular or decaf)
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 cup nonfat dry milk powder
  • 1 cup powdered nondairy creamer
  • 1 cup French vanilla powdered nondairy creamer

Instructions

  1. Combine spices, tea, sugar, milk powder, and creamers in a large food processor. Blend 1 to 2 minutes, or until mixture becomes a fine powder. Divide mix into gift jars.
  2. TO SERVE: Stir 2 heaping tablespoons of mix into a mug of hot milk or boiling water. (From here, you may chill and serve over ice for Chai Iced Tea Latte.)
  3. TO MAKE CHOCOLATE CHAI OR WHITE CHOCOLATE CHAI: Make Chai Tea using milk, as directed above, and also stir in 2 teaspoons of finely chopped semi-sweet or white chocolate.
  4. TO MAKE A CHAI SHAKE: Blend 2 tablespoons mix, 1/2 cup milk, and 1 3/4 cups vanilla ice cream in a bender.

Notes

You may also make mix in a blender instead of a food processor, but you will probably have to blend the ingredients in batches and then mix all of the powdered ingredients together in a bowl until thoroughly incorporated.

  1. Shucks! I don’t think we have instant tea here in Australia. Nor the vanillia creamer.

    • Samantha at Five Heart Home Samantha at Five Heart Home says:

Darn, Jennifer! I wish I had a recommendation for some substitute ingredients that might work. But hopefully instant tea and vanilla creamer will make it to Australia one day so you can try this??? πŸ˜‰

  2. You really did a most excellent job. What a fine recipe. It really is Chai and not some watered down mixture. I am impressed. I also really liked the eggnog pudding.

    • Samantha at Five Heart Home Samantha at Five Heart Home says:

Thanks so much, Carol! Drinks made with this mix do turn out pretty Chai-like, for those who like Chai. πŸ˜‰ Hope you’re having a wonderful December! I just realized that I owe you a return e-mail. Sorry…sometimes my inbox gets the best of me! πŸ˜›

  9. Hello! I love chai tea and I want to use your recipe but there is one problem.. I am allergic to Cow Milk. So what can I use instead for the milk powder? πŸ™‚

    • Samantha at Five Heart Home Samantha at Five Heart Home says:

Hi Evine! Hmmmm…I’m not sure. I just did a quick Google search and it looks like there are dairy-free powdered milk options available, like soy milk powder, rice milk powder, and almond milk powder. That being said, I’m not sure how easy those are to find or how they would affect the ultimate flavor of the Chai Tea. Good luck if you decide to experiment and, if so, please come back and let us know how things turn out! πŸ™‚

  10. I LOVE YOU!!!!! Thank you so much!!! My daughter gives a gift to ALL the teachers at school and the lunch workers and custodians… it gets espensive and many of them like different things. 11. Just a quick question, and I apologize if it’s already been asked, but is the instant tea the same as instant ICED tea mix?

    Thanks!

    • Samantha at Five Heart Home Samantha at Five Heart Home says:

Great question, Christine! And you are correct…unsweetened instant tea is referring to the iced tea mix. πŸ™‚

  12. I just made this chai tea mix and it was delicious! I made some for myself and some for a Christmas gift. I used a blender instead of a food processer, adding one cup of mix at a time. It worked perfectly.

The tags are great too! Thanks so much for sharing!

    • Samantha at Five Heart Home Samantha at Five Heart Home says:

You’re so welcome, Kristin! I’m very happy to hear that you enjoy the chai tea mix and will be giving it as gifts. Merry Christmas! πŸ™‚

  13. Why do I need to put it in a food processor or blender ? Can i just mix it in a large bowl or sift it

    • Samantha at Five Heart Home Samantha at Five Heart Home says:

Hi Tracy! You could probably mix or sift these ingredients and everything would turn out just fine. However, I recommend using a food processor or blender since the various ingredients have different sized granules. Processing or blending it all together will not only combine everything, but doing so will also reduce the mixture to a fine powder that dissolves nicely when added to hot milk or water. Hope you enjoy either way!
