Zesty Black Bean Dip ~ healthy dip flavored with fresh garlic, jalapeño, cilantro, lime juice, and cumin; delicious with tortilla chips or raw veggies | FiveHeartHome.comToday was a big day at Five Heart Home.

My first grader was home from school for the President’s Day holiday, but his younger brother still had preschool this morning. It was a rare opportunity to eat lunch with my biggest big boy in the absence of his 4-year-old best friend and biggest competitor for attention. So there we were, peacefully crunching away on our apples, when my son exclaimed, “Ouch! My tooth hurts!”

He was holding a front bottom tooth, and one thing instantly popped into my head. Sure enough, upon inspection, my suspicions were confirmed.

You see, my 6-year-old is one of the (if not the) last amongst his classmates to lose a tooth. He has been lamenting his mouthful of baby teeth for months now. And it appears that today was going to be his lucky day.

“What?” he replied.

“You have a LOOSE TOOTH!!! Can you believe it?!”

And the immediate look upon his face was a mixture of happiness, pride, embarrassment, and horror.

“Aren’t you excited?” I asked. And he looked like he just might cry.

Me too, kid. I remember when that same little tooth just barely poked through your 7-month-old gums. I remember how it was barely discernible to the eye yet I could feel its razor sharp corner with my fingertip. I remember how I gently pulled down your bottom lip with my thumb while snapping a proud picture to e-mail to your daddy at work.

My biggest big boy is more than ready to enter the land of lost teeth with his friends, but it’s also momentarily a bit scary for him to think that a physical part of his body is soon going to fall out and be gone forever. And in the same way, I’m happy and proud each time my eldest hits a new milestone, yet a small part of me wants to weep (and possibly does, while hiding in the pantry with a bag of chocolate) at the thought of how quickly my baby’s childhood is flying by.

On the upside, hitting the big milestones with the firstborn takes away some of the sting the next time around. By the time child #2 loses his first tooth, we’ll celebrate and make a big deal, but I probably will not feel that same pang in my heart. And baby #3? Well, hopefully the Tooth Fairy remembers to visit her at all in a timely manner. ;)

Now…you might have spent the last few paragraphs wondering what the heck all of that has to do with this yummy, healthy, protein-packed Black Bean Dip, bursting with fresh garlic, cilantro, and lime juice, seasoned with cumin and balsamic vinegar, and spiced with just enough jalapeño for flavor (and did I mention it whips up in just a few minutes)? Well, until his newly loose tooth comes out, my son has proclaimed that he can’t bite into anything hard or crunchy. So I see lots of soft and pureed food in his future…perhaps such as this fine recipe, scooped up with a spoon? Heyyy…that almost sounds like something my sweet little tooth-cutting 7-month-old would have eaten.

Zesty Black Bean Dip

Zesty Black Bean Dip

This healthy black bean dip -- flavored with fresh garlic, cilantro, jalapeño, lime juice, and cumin -- is equally delicious served with tortilla chips or raw veggies!

Ingredients

  • 2 large cloves garlic
  • 1 jalapeño, seeds and membranes removed, chopped into chunks
  • 1/2 cup packed fresh cilantro leaves
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons water

Directions

  1. Place garlic, jalapeño, and cilantro in the bowl a food processor (or the pictcher of a blender). Process until finely chopped, scraping down sides halfway through. Add black beans, cumin, garlic salt, chili powder, oregano, pepper, lime juice, vinegar, and 2 tablespoons water to food processor. Process until all ingredients are smooth, adding additional water one tablespoon at a time (if necessary) until preferred consistency is reached. Taste and adjust seasonings as desired.
  2. Garnish with cilantro. You can also add a little cheese (cotija, cheddar, Monterrey Jack, etc.) and a sprinkle of diced tomatoes for color. Serve as a dip with tortilla chips or raw vegetables.

  1. That looks just delicious! I love black beans – and lime! Speaking of kids and teeth, one of our boys wanted to start pulling out all his teeth after getting money under his pillow for the first one!

Oh my…too funny! My son ended up losing his tooth at dinner last night and was quite proud of his Tooth Fairy spoils this morning. Now I guess we’ll see if he’s as entrepreneurial as your son in planning his next payment! ;)

  2. Love your story! We had the tradition of putting their tooth in a glass of water at night. When the kids woke up, the water would be colored and have glitter sitting on top & the tooth would be gone. They loved it! Unfortunately, sometimes the water with the tooth gets dumped down the drain during the frantic “get the kitchen cleaned up before bedtime” routine. And now that we’ve lost countless numbers of teeth, the tooth fairy always forgets. The kids are used to it now, though! Enjoy each moment. I can’t believe Maddie will be a teenager in just a few short months. And with it comes a whole new set of struggles. :) Enjoy your day!

Awww…what a sweet story, Julie! I love the idea of colored water and glitter. It’s been fun hearing how different people celebrate the Tooth Fairy! :) And I know that it will feel like the blink of an eye before we have a teenager in the house…time just flies when you have kids!

Hope y’all are having a great week! Thanks, as always, for stopping by! :)

  3. What a great looking recipe! My fiancee was asking about black bean dip just the other day – we’ll have to make this soon! I can see him string to sneak some of the jalapeño seeds in, though.

    • Samantha at Five Heart Home Samantha at Five Heart Home says:

Thanks, Natashalh…I hope y’all enjoy this dip when you try it! If your fiancee prefers it spicier, maybe you can blend up the dip the way you like it, scoop some out for you, and then add more jalapeños/seeds to the food processor and puree them into his portion? Just a thought… :)

  4. Samantha, I loved your description of all the emotions you and your boy felt about this milestone :) I remember feeling mildly horrified and excited when I was on the verge of losing my first tooth for the exact reasons you list. Also, this bean dip looks phenomenal! I’m a definite snacker and am always looking for things to accompany lovely, salty chips!

    • Samantha at Five Heart Home Samantha at Five Heart Home says:

You have a better memory than I do, Amy, because I don’t remember how I felt about losing my first tooth! But it totally makes sense that there’s a little bit of apprehension mixed in with the excitement. My son ended up pulling his tooth the next day when it became even looser while eating dinner. Immediately afterwards, he did look upset for a few seconds before the relief and pride crept in. So I guess that’s one more milestone we have behind us!

On another note, I love chips, too, and it’s always fun to have something to dip them in, so I hope you enjoy this recipe! :) Thanks so much for stopping by…happy Friday!

  5. Delicious. I love bean dip and I love black beans. This is a great combination of flavors.

    • Samantha at Five Heart Home Samantha at Five Heart Home says:

Thank you, Joybee! Black beans are wonderful, aren’t they? Hope you enjoy this rendition of them. :)

  6. What a cute story. My kids are teens now and growing right before my eyes so all I can say is treasure every second!

My Say G’Day Saturday linky party has started up again after a long break and this recipe would be a perfect addition to this week’s party. Please pop by if you have a minute and say g’day!

Best wishes for a great weekend,

It really does fly by, doesn’t it, Natasha? I know that my little ones are going to be teenagers before I can blink! *sniff*

Thanks so much for stopping by, and I appreciate the invitation to your link party! Heading over to check it out… :)
